If you prefer a prayerful, reverent Sunday Mass, this is NOT the church for you. If you like the feeling of a Protestant mega-church, and if you like being entertained at your church svc, you'll like this one. Truthfully, I walked out shell-shocked. It was all about the music, and about entertainment, NOT about the sacrifice of the Mass. Upon arrival 5-10 minutes early, it was impossible to pray with all the chatter. Then the lead singer broke into a solo prior to the start which everyone clapped for afterwards. The lead singer wore a robe and stood on a stage in front level with the altar, and seemed to demand the attention of the audience when she sang throughout the Mass with both arms stretched up to the heavens. To add to this, the congregation actually clapped for her after the Communion song while everyone is supposed to be in pray over having just received the body of Christ! During Communion I was distracted reading the minister's nametag (it bore a name along with a city and state in the NE) so it was partly my fault when she dropped the host, however my feelings about the place were reinforced when she picked it off the floor and ate it. As a Sacristan, we are taught never to self-communicate. There is no kneeling throughout the Mass (they stand during the Consecration) and the folks around me were shouting out the prayers and responses, more like a football game than a Mass. If I felt the pastor was a new-age liberal before, I was quite certain after hearing the petitions after the homily which included prayers that our lawmakers will pass laws limiting gun and ammo ownership! REALLY!?!? Add to that the pastor's pitch for a great happy hour he'd just discovered at Ruth's Chris steakhouse as the after-Mass announcement! I admired their exuberance, and I know this style appeals to some folk, but I won't be back.

  • If I could, I would rate this warm, welcoming, joyous Catholic community a 10!

We were enveloped in fellowship; we were made to feel that they had been waiting for us to arrive. As new full time residents of the Bradenton/Sarasota/Venice area, we had been attending Mass at many of the area's churches. Each was "Catholic", focused on the presence of Jesus on the altar during Mass; the priests developing in the congregation a deeper understanding of the Scripture through their homilies; each taught the same doctrine, worshiped God and honored the saints as real humans who lived their lives on earth in extraordinary ways. Most of the parishes were more traditional; that option is very available on Florida's Suncoast.

St. Thomas's members raise their voices in musical prayer; it is an amazingly lively and joyful participation. As I looked at the faces around me, I saw a church FILLED with reverent Catholics who were worshiping God in a way that was comforting to them. God gave the parish's music ministers a great talent; they are not "hiding them under a basket" but using them to light the way to God.

We drive 28 minutes one way to attend Mass in this wonderful parish. Another parish is less than 5 minutes away. I praise, and thank God, that options are available to draw all of His people into true communion with Him.

  • How can one describe their experience when trying to describe being in the true presence of Jesus Christ? After all, is that not where we are when we go to Holy Mass? So, no matter where we attend Mass, whether in Rome, our parish church to which we belong, or in any other Catholic church in the world. The beauty of the Mass is the same. St. Thomas More Catholic Church is a beautiful church, not unlike any other Catholic Church in the world.
